The Co-op program at Kennedy Space Center is broad, and co-ops may be placed into one of many organizations throughout the Center. Below you will find a list of some of the Directorates that hire co-op students and the main responsibilities of each of these areas.

Spaceport Engineering and Technology

NASA's Spaceport Technology Center is a world-class resource for the space transportation industry. No other site in the world processes and launches as many different types of reusable and expendable space vehicles as well as a wide variety of both government and commercial payloads. The Spaceport Engineering and Technology division here at Kennedy Space Center works to develop advanced spaceport technologies and systems that enable safer and cheaper access to space. They also strive to extended human space exploration using innovative and integrated science and engineering techniques. This mission is accomplished in partnership with other KSC organizations, NASA Centers, Government Agencies, industry and academia.

Spaceport Engineering and Technology Departments generally accepts co-op students majoring in:

Aerospace Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Civil Engineering
Chemical Engineering
Computer Engineering
Computer Science
Other Majors as needed

Space Shuttle Processing

The Space Shuttle Directorate's main task is to identify, prioritize and implement the safety operations, maintenance, and technology upgrades across the Space Shuttle Program. The program also strives to provide safe, reliable, and affordable human space transportation through the year 2012 and beyond.

Space Shuttle Processing Department generally accepts co-op students majoring in:

Electrical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Industrial Engineering
Computer Engineering
Aerospace Engineering

Expendable Launch Vehicles

The Expendable Launch Vehicle (ELV) Program Office provides a focal point for the acquisition and management of ELV launch services. These unmanned vehicles can accommodate all types of orbit inclinations and altitudes and are ideal vehicles for launching Earth-orbit and interplanetary missions alike. The program provides launch services for NASA, NASA-sponsored payloads, and other government payloads. Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, a part of Kennedy Space Center is also one of the primary launch sites for this directorate.

Expendable Launch Vehicles Directorate generally accepts co-op students majoring in:

Electrical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Industrial Engineering
Computer Engineering
Aerospace Engineering
Physics
Other majors as needed

Space Station/Payload Processing

Drawing upon the scientific and technological resources of 17 nations across the globe, the International Space Station opens the space frontier like no previous endeavor. The orbiting outpost promises to change the face of science, enabling research in a micro-gravity environment impossible to achieve on Earth. As the final checkpoint for U.S.-launched Station hardware, this directorate plays a key role in the development of the growing outpost, processing all elements and preparing them for flight. In addition to the Station payloads, this directorate also processes all other Shuttle payloads, thus becoming the focal point and experts on payload processing.

The International Space Station Department generally accepts co-op students majoring in:

Mechanical Engineering
Aerospace Engineering
Industrial Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Electronics Engineering
Computer Engineering
Other majors as needed

Spaceport Services

Spaceport Services provides safe and reliable institutional services to KSC customers enabling cost effective access to space. Partnered with their customers, Spaceport Services utilizes innovative approaches to forward thinking, environmental stewardship, planning and execution making possible the current and future state of the Cape Canaveral Spaceport.
