  NASA FACT

The seating assignments in the Firing Room change according to the launch vehicle. For example, the seating arrangement for a launch using a Delta II launch vehicle may be different from the seating arrangement for a launch using a Pegasus launch vehicle.

NASA's twin robot geologists, the Mars Exploration Rovers, are embarking on a journey to Mars. Their mission: To uncover the secrets of the Red Planet's evolution.

Darren Bedell is responsible for advising the NASA launch manager about any concerns with the Delta II launch vehicle's status and readiness. He provides the NASA Engineering "Go/No-Go" status to the NASA launch manager based on information from the KSC Engineering Team.

Bedell received his bachelor of science in engineering (applied mechanics) with a minor in management science from the University of California San Diego in 1985. He then worked as a structural systems engineer for McDonnell Douglas Aerospace from 1986 to 1991.

He joined NASA in 1991 and became the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) mission integration manager for secondary payloads and mission coordination manager for Delta program primary missions in GSFC's West Coast Resident Office. After completing the NASA Professional Development Program in 1995, he was named NASA GSFC mission integration manager. He was assigned to Kennedy Space Center in 1998 as the chief of the Mission Integration Branch and chief of the Mission Integration and Customer Division. He served as chief of the Vehicle Engineering Division before assuming his current post in 2002.
