Title: Artist concept of STS-34 SSBUV in orbit calibration
Description:
Artist concept titled SSBUV IN ORBIT CALIBRATION shows how the shuttle
solar backscatter ultraviolet (UV) (SSBUV) instrument will calibrate ozone
measuring space-based instruments on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration's (NOAA's) TIROS satellites NOAA-9 and NOAA-11. During
STS-34, SSBUV instruments mounted in get away special (GAS) canisters in
Atlantis', Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 104's, payload bay will use the Space
Shuttle's orbital flight path to assess instrument performance by directly
comparing data from identical instruments aboard the TIROS satellite, as
OV-104 and the satellite pass over the same Earth location within a
one-hour window. SSBUV is managed by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center
(GSFC). Alternate number on image is E66.001.
