Title: Cutaway line drawing of STS-34 middeck experiment Polymer Morphology (PM)
  Description:
Cutaway line drawing shows components of STS-34 middeck experiment Polymer
Morphology (PM). Generic Electronics Module (GEM) components include the
control housing, circulating fans, hard disk, tape drives, computer boards,
and heat exchanger. PM, a 3M-developed organic materials processing
experiment, is designed to explore the effects of microgravity on polymeric
materials as they are processed in space. The samples of polymeric
materials being studied in the PM experiment are thin films (25 microns or
less) approximately 25mm in diameter. The samples are mounted between two
infrared transparent windows in a specially designed infrared cell that
provides the capability of thermally processing the samples to 200 degrees
Celsius with a high degree of thermal control. The samples are mounted on
a carousel that allows them to be positioned, one at a time, in the
infrared beam where spectra may be acquired. The GEM provides all
carousel and sample cell control (SCC). The first flight of PM will
contain 17 samples. PM experiment is being conducted by 3M's Space
  Research and Applications Laboratory.
