  This view of St. Louis, MO (39.0N, 90.0W) and the Mississippi River shows a 
  very good example of urban development on the vulnerable flood plains of a 
  meandering river.  Despite a system of levees and dikes to channel current 
  and water flow, rain swollen rivers may often change their riverbeds and
  the  ground scars of the former meanderings of the river are easily seen in
  the  fertile river bottom land between the cliffs on either side of the
  river.
