  Description:
STS-48 Discovery, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 103, soars into the evening sky
after lifting off from Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Launch Complex (LC) Pad
39A at 7:11:04 pm (Eastern Daylight Time). OV-103's port side, left solid
rocket booster (SRB), and the external tank (ET) are visible as it rides
atop the glow of the SRB/space shuttle main engine (SSME) firings and a
huge exhaust plume which has engulfed the launch pad area. The launch
glow is reflected in a nearby waterway. The diamond shock effect appears
  at the SSME nozzles.
